50th Collection: Workingman’s Dead

The Grateful Dead released the 50th anniversary edition of the American rock classic recording, Workingman’s Dead today. I have a special connection with this album through the Capitol Theatre Howard Stein days.

My first experience witnessing the Grateful Dead live occurred at the Capitol Theatre in Portchester NY on November 7, 1970. I first heard the track “New Speedway Boogie” over the loudspeaker system from Workingman’s Dead on June 14, 1970 in the balcony waiting for Santana to perform the late show. This was the release day in the U.S. for the album. I loved what I heard so fervently I was motivated to run down to the box office where I bought a pair of 7th row center seats (six months before the show) for their November 7, concert.

The Dead loved the Cap and Jerry Garcia said it was his favorite venue to play after the Fillmore West (this is according to Warren Haynes who has played the Garcia guitar role in the latter day Dead unit.)

The 50th anniversary edition features the live concert from the Dead at The Capitol Theatre recorded February 21, 1971. Which is fitting and appropriate as the Dead played the Capitol Theatre many times in the early 70s. If you combine that with how I discovered Workingman’s Dead its simpatico. Peter Shapiro, promoter and Capitol Theatre owner booked the last Grateful Dead concerts, the “Fare Thee Well” shows at Soldiers Field in Chicago, July 3-July 5, 2015. So the Grateful Dead/Capitol Theatre partnership lives on!

R.E.M. Tour 2004

I’ve been listening to R.EM.’s catalog these past few days. I’m reminded of their Around the Sun 2004 North American Tour. We saw them live at Mohegan Sun on November 5, 2004.

My one regret was not buying their tour t-shirt as it contained one of my favorite sayings about music, “music will provide the light you cannot resist”. I’ve been searching the Web for many years to find that shirt. Today I found one on eBay and purchased it in my size.

St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital

This is the second blog post written to honor and praise our patron Saint, St. Jude Thaddeus, whom my wife and I hold in the highest regard. I first discovered the miraculous power of St. Jude’s Novena Prayer in 1981. I learned to say his novena to grant a miracle I needed in my life. By saying his novena nine days in a row, nine times each day, leaving a copy in church each day, it has never been known to fail by the eighth day. Then I published our thanks in the local newspaper. I have never forgotten how St. Jude granted our miracle request. We have a tremendous bond with St. Jude these past 39 years.

When I discovered the Danny Thomas miracle request to St. Jude I decided St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital would become our charity of choice. We give whatever we can every year to honor the commitment made to children and their families that no family should have to pay for cancer treatment to heal their child.

Several years ago my wife and I travelled with close friends to Memphis, Tennessee to visit St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital. It was part of our Memphis city tour. What a rewarding and enriching moment it was to see where miracles are performed. It renewed even further our vow to donate to this vital charity.

There was a statue of Danny Thomas in the front of the hospital. We said a prayer thanking him for his role as benefactor, substantiating how he honored St. Jude in following through as a savior to children and their families.

We then visited the St. Jude Gift Shop and made some purchases. We continue to make gift purchases online to help the foundation. Even made one today :).

Trust in the power of St. Jude Thaddeus. His gift of granting miracles is a deep religious blessing. Amen.

Chicago Blues: Michael Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield

Are you a Chicago blues enthusiast living in Connecticut? You may be interested in a free music event that will highlight Michael Bloomfield and Paul Butterfield’s influences on blues rock. Born in Chicago is a smart agenda featuring a blues book signing, film clip viewing, and a panel discussion experience.

The Chicago blues info-session is scheduled for Saturday, November 16th from 5-7 p.m.. It will be held at the Judy Black Memorial Park and Gardens in Washington, Connecticut.

Noteworthy Participants

Larry Milburn happens to be Michael Bloomfield’s cousin. He is a filmmaker who also produces a regular podcast, “Roadie Free Radio“. The podcasts highlight the roadie’s role as the backbone of live music before, during, and after performances. Larry will lead the Chicago blues panel discussion with David Dann, Author and Sandy Warren, Producer.

David Dann has written a book, “Guitar King: Michael Bloomfield’s Life in the Blues” just published by University of Texas Press. The comprehensive biography of the late, great Michael Bloomfield brings to life a dazzling electric-guitar virtuoso who transformed rock ’n’ roll in the 1960s and made a lasting impact on the blues genre.
